Eric Hughes is an Architectural Designer and Researcher based in Boston, MA, where he works for Utile Architecture and Planning. He graduated with honors from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch) in 2021 and received a Master of Architecture in Architectural Design (M.Arch, B-Pro) with Distinction from the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London (UCL) in 2022. Upon graduating, Eric was awarded the “Architectural Design Gold Medal” for best graduate design thesis and for the research he conducted within the Living Architecture Lab.  Eric has prior professional experience working in both Georgia (USA) and New York, contributing to a wide range of projects including historic preservation, higher education, and commercial architecture.

Eric Hughes’s academic research is focused on the production of nonlinear organization systems with situated/embodied agency and artificial intelligence, investigating a novel and emerging sector of architecture that welcomes the evolution of design, functionality, and adaptability. He has made notable contributions to several journals, including ACADIA (The Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture) and CAADRIA (The Association for Computer-Aided Architectural Design Research in Asia). His co-authored paper, “ACRR+DMARL,” showcases one of the first applications of deep multi-agent reinforcement learning in collective robotic construction, demonstrating the potential for autonomous, reconfigurable, and scalable architecture through the collaboration of simple robots.

As a component of his practice, Eric has served as a visiting critic for design juries at Mississippi State University and the GSD.
